The Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum "Het Steen" traces its origins to the Stedelijk Scheepvaartmuseum which was opened in 1927. The current museum dates from 1958 and is housed in Het Steen, the ancient city castle.

A dozen museum ships are exhibited in the adjacent harbour shed "Afdak 22":

The patrol boat P905 Schelde of the Belgium Navy is also open to the public.
