Poros

Poros naval base

The island of Poros in the Aegean.

Georg Averoff (1910), Armoured cruiser/pocket battleship built in England in 1910. ~10,000 tons, 4x10" 8x6" main armament. Check before visiting; About 1980 it was still an active training base.

Only open Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. It is possible the base might have been closed or the ship moved since then. Day trip from Athens.

Symi

(Maritime Museum)

Symi was once an active port with a shipyard which turned out hundreds of crafts a year.

The museum houses a number of models of Greek sailing vessels and boats as well as a collection of shipyard tools, rigging blocks and other artifacts. A diver's suit and an air pump reminds of the sponge fising days.

Photography in the museum is not allowed.
