A working wooden shipyard museum, which also is one of Amsterdam's oldest shipyards. A large collection of ship-engines is on display.

The Dutch History gallery exhibits several ship models, among them the large scale model of the VOC-ship Prins Willem of 1651. There is also a large collection of Dutch naval models from the 17th to 19th century in the reserve collection. These will eventually be displayed in a separate gallery.

The Coat-of-Arms from the stern of the English warship Royal Charles captured at the Dutch raid on Medway in June 1667 is on display together with the stern laterns.

The famous Dutch marine painters are also well represented both in the Dutch History gallery and other galleries.

The museum is located about one kilometer east of the central railway station. Take bus 22 or 28 from the Central Station or the Museum Boat or Artis Express.

The museum, which was created in 1916 through the initiative of the Vereeniging Nederlands Historisch Scheepvaart Museum, became a Rijksmuseum in 1975. Since 1973 located in the 's Lands Zeemagazijn, a former arsenal for the Amsterdam Admiralty.
The library, which is open to the public, has more than 60.000 volumes of books [1994].

The Batavia-Werf at Lelystad has built a reconstruction of the VOC-ship the Batavia (1628).

Currently [1998] a reconstruction of the 80-gun ship De Zeven Provinciën of 1665, the flag-ship of Admiral Michiel Adriaensz. de Reuter, is being built according to traditional 17th century Dutch shipbuilding practices.
