The museum traces its origin to a fishery exhibit at the World Exhibition in Stockholm in the 1890ssponosored by the US Fish Commission. Today the collections feature the maritime history of North Carolina, including the US Coat Guard, fishing, shipwreck, and lifesaving. A new exhibit features the pirate Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, and the wreck of his ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge

In addition to a collection of local small craft, the museum also has an active boatbuilding program.
