Appendix N° 40.

After some progress had been made in printing the foregoing pages, I was favoured by George Palliser, Esq. of Chatham Dock-yard, with sundry Papers from the collection of the late Sir Hugh Palliser; among which was a copy of a List of the Navy in 1546, the original said to have been written by Anthony Anthony, one of the Officers of the Ordnance, and presented by him to Henry the Eighth, in the 38th year of his reign; of which copy the following is a transcript.

The following mention is made of Mr. Anthony's foregoing List of the Navy, in the 6th vol. of the Archæologia, page 207 (Note):— "This curious book, beautifully drawn and written upon vellum, and embellished with gold, is inituled, 'A Declaration of the Royal Navy of England, composed by Anthony Anthony, one of the Officers of the Ordnance, and by him presented to King Henry the Eighth, an. regni. 38 Dni. 1546*, in three parchment rolls, containing roll 1st, Shyppes — 2d, Galliasses — 3d, Pinasses and Rowe Bargys.' "These rolls were kept in the Royal Library until the year 1680, when King Charles the Second presented the first and third of the rolls to Samuel Pepys, Esq. then Secretary to the Admiralty; the second roll being afterwards found, was remaining in 1690 in the Royal Library at St. James's, which Library was given by King George II. to the British Museum; but this roll probably did not accompany that collection, it not being now to be found in that valuable repository of useful knowledge."
