Except for the carving of the figurehead and the stern the model is not up to the standard of the usual Royal Dockyard standard.

The family arms of Montague and Buccleuch which appear in several places suggest that the model was made for presentation.

The unusual scale which coincide with 9/32":1' has been determined from the draughtmarks on the model.

The model is probably built with a solid hull which has been planked over with boxwood planks without using any fastenings. It is mounted on a slipway ready for launching with flagpoles in the place of the masts. The flags dates from the period 1801-1816. Agrees closely with the Portland-class of Fourth Rates built between 1770 and 1790. Franklin identifies this model as the Leopard of 1790 on account of the leopards present on the stern. However the absence of the name on the counter suggests a date before 1770.
