Lord Shaftesbury

A four-masted steel ship built in 1888 by Whitehaven Shipbuilding Co., Whitehaven. Dimensions: 89,37×13,00×7,31 meters [293'3"×42'8"×24'0"] and tonnage: 2341 GRT and 2273 NRT.

A sistership to the fourmasted ship Galgate.

Rigged with royal sails over double top and topgallant sails. Later re-rigged as a barque.

1888 December
Launched at the shipyard of Whitehaven Shipbuilding Co., Whitehaven, for J. Herron & Co., Liverpool. Captain J. Cunningham.
Sold to A.P. Rolph, Liverpool, and was renamed Golden Gate. Captain H.M. Burgess.
Sailed from New Caledonia to Delaware Capes in 88 days [?, Cf. Lord Ripon].
Sold to J. Rolph, San Francisco.
Sold to Rolph Navigation & Coal Co., San Francisco.
Broken up at Alameda, CA, after the owner's death.
