She was never officialy commissioned due to public opinion, but did sail a few trips without cargo, ( cargo capasity was 2400 tons ). She is named after the city where her nuclear plant was installed. Last reports said she was going to be re-engined. The long time laid up German OTTO HAHN will also be re-engined. She was built in 1964 and is 17000 GRT. This vessel was built as an iron-ore carrier and did sail several trips with cargo. To go back to SAVANNAH, from August 1966 to August 1967 had covered 86000 miles on voyages to Europe, called at sevent-four ports and carried 36000 tons of cargo.
