Baltimore

The Semi-Annual Steaming of the only Coal-fired Tugboat on the East Coast.

The tugboat Baltimore worked for Baltimore's harbor as a sightseeing vessel, ice-breaker and towboat for almost 60 years. While under private ownership in 1979, she sank and remained under water for two years. Volunteers affiliated with the (then-fledgling) Baltimore Museum of Industry showed interest in the tug, prompting the tug's owners to make an offer: if you can raise her, you can have her. To make a very long story short(er), they did raise her and have restored her not only to look authentic but to actually operate as she did in the early part of our century.

Since 1990, she has plied the Inner Harbor waters twice a year under her own coal-fired steam power. Her next steaming is scheduled for May 6 & 7. She lights off at 1700 hours on May 5th and will take about 6 trips per day. The Baltimore is owned by the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
