Tug "Jason A. Kadinger" Taking on Water - Vic. Lake Forest, IL - Lake Michigan

Wednesday morning, Group Milwaukee received a report from the Tug Jason A. Kadinger that they were sinking approximately 5 NM offshore. The tug had a 30 degree list and the stern was awash. An Air Station Chicago HH-65 and a Station Kenosha UTB were immediately dispatched. The HH-65 hoisted all of the 3 POB from the mostly submerged vessel and transported them to Air Station Chicago.

While conducting the SAR case above, a 200 YD by 40 YD diesel sheen was noted coming from the vessel. The tug remains adrift and is mostly submerged with approximately 3500 gallons of diesel fuel aboard. A commercial salvage company was contracted by the owner to secure the fuel leak and salvage the vessel but salvage operations could not be undertaken due to 4-6 foot seas and 20-30 KT NE winds. The contractor is expected to commence salvaging the vessel today (Thu 11/09/94).
