Hesperus

An iron fullrigged ship built in 1873 by Robert Steele & Co., Greenock. Dimensions: 262'2"×39'7"×23'5" and tonnage: 1859 GRT, 1777 NRT and 1574 tons under deck. Equipped with two decks and the forecastle was 40' long and the poop 74'. Sister ship to the same owner's [?] ship Aurora. Originally rigged with skysails.

Launched at the shipyard of Robert Steele & Co., Greenock, for the Orient Line (Anderson, Anderson & Co.), Aberdeen. Assigned the official British Reg. No. 68500 and signal MNDL. Employed in the Australian trade.

Sailed from London to Adelaide in 80 days.

In command of Captain T.R. Harry.

Sold to Devitt & Moore, London, to be used as a sail training ship.

Sailed from London to Sydney in 88 days.

Sailed from Sydney to London in 86 days. This was her first voyage home by way of Cape Horn.
1892 October 11 - December 23
Sailed from London to Sydney in 73 days from Lizard Point.
1893 September 11 - December 29
Sailed from London to Hobson's Bay, 72 days from the Lizard Point. On December 10 the Hesperus logged 358 miles.
1898-1899
In command of Captain Charles Maitland late of the same owner's ship Harbinger.
1899
Sold to Russian owners in Odessa for £ 9000 and was renamed Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna.
1913
Refitted by Swan and Hunter, Wallsend.
1921
Sold to London Steamship and Trading Corporation and was renamed Silvana.
1924
Broken up at Genoa.
