The Ferdinand Laeisz shipping line was founded by a bookbinder and hatter in Hamburg. With the increase iof the export of hats to South-East Asia, Laeisz ordered a brig from J. Meyer, a shipbuilder in Lübeck.

His son Carl Laeisz joined in the management of the company in 1852.

Today the company is specialized in reefers for the banana shipping business.

Changed the name of the company from Reederei F. Laeisz to Firma F. Laesz G.m.b.H.
