The Ferdinand Laeisz shipping line was founded by a bookbinder and hatter in Hamburg. With the increase iof the export of hats to South-East Asia, Laeisz ordered a brig from J. Meyer, a shipbuilder in Lübeck.
His son Carl Laeisz joined in the management of the company in 1852.
Today the company is specialized in reefers for the banana shipping business.
