Was dis-masted in an engagement with the French frigate La Vengeance during thw Quasi-War with France.

The frigate Constellation in February 1812, was brought to the wharf, stripped down to the lower futtocks, many of which and some of her floor timbers were replaced with new; from thence rebuilt uup entirely new, being much improved by an extension of fourteen inches more beam at the main breadth. She has new masts, spars, etc., and left the Yard a better ship in every respect, and still continue to be.
