She took her name from a ferocious fish of the West Indies, and she took it very seriously. No other submarine was able to do what the Batfish did. She sank three submarines, plus 11 other vessels for a total of over 37.000 tons of enemy shipping. (This was done during the time when enemy ships became very scarce and difficult to locate.) Her incredible record earned the Batfish 9 Battle Stars and her crew: 1 Navy Cross, 4 Silver Stars, and 10 Bronze Stars!
The USS Batfish was berthed almost 30 years later in Muskogee.
Stop a moment as you step into the forward torpedo room. Listen to the echoing voices of history. The engines throb as the Batfish cuts through the silent darkness. You take hold of one of the wheels and ponder the responsibilitys of a World War II submarine captains with a crew of 80 lives. As the warning siren begins to shriek you prepare to dive! With just a little immagination, a visit to the Batfish will place you under the sea in a faraway time.
Fifty-two submarines [American?] were lost during WWII, but they still live on in a thought-provoking memorial at the Batfish Park. A series of bronze stands name each ship and its crew - 3505 brave sailors in all!
