Founded in Great Britain in 1981 to further research in all aspects of nautical archaeology and to ensure the publication of the results. It aims: to advance education in nautical archaology at all levels; to improve techniques in reporting, excavating and conservation; to encourage participation by members of the public at all stages. The Society is committed to promote the protection of the underwater cultural heritage throughout the world and to increase public appreciation of it.

Principally the Society exsists as a forum for the exchange of ideas relevant to nautical archaeology. It seeks to bring together all those who are interested in this field for discussion so as to secure a wide dissemination of the knowledge gained.

The Society publishes the quarterly journal International Journal of Nautical Archaeology [ISSN 1057-2414] in association with Academic Press and produces a Newsletter and organizes both on its own behalf and in association with other bodies: conferences, symposia, lectures, organized visits, field projects and expeditions.
