Drydocking of the four-masted barque Pommern.

The four-masted barque Pommern was towed from Mariehamn to Stockholm on September 1, 1996, to be dry-docked at Beckholmens Varv. It has been reported earlier that, weather permitting, a couple of sails whould be set to assist the tug.

The Pommern was built in 1903 by J. Reid & Co., Glasgow, as the Mneme. Gustaf Erikson, Mariehamn, bought the ship in 1923 and she sailed for him primarily in the Australia-Europe wheat trade until the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1953 the Erikson family presented the ship to the City of Mariehamn. Since then the ship has been preserved in sailing condition as a museum in Mariehamn.

The last time she was drydocked in Stockholm was in 1987 and before that in 1975. This time the drydocking is expected to take four to six weeks during which time in addition to ordinary maintenance the ballast, which has been in the ship since 1939, will be bagged.
