Barclay, Curle & Co.

Glasgow

Robert Barclay 1844-55 and Robert Barclay and Curle 1845-63 with yards at Stobcross, were the predecessors, and in 1855 established the yard at Whiteinch, which became Barclay, Curle. It became a Limited Company in 1884. In 1912, it was amalgated with Swan, Hunter.

This shipyard was "established at Stobcross, Glasgow, Strathclyde, in 1818 by John Barclay. In 1845 his son, Robert, took James Hamilton and Robert Curle into partnership, trading as Robert Barclay & Curle, admitting John Ferguson two years later. In 1857 the partnership was further extended by the addition of Andrew Maclean and Archibald Gilchrist. The firm's name changed to Barclay, Curle & Co in 1863 and was incorporated a limited liability company in 1884 as Barclay, Curle & Co Ltd. In 1855 a yard at Clydeholm, Whiteinch, Glasgow, was acquired from J.G. Lawrie and in 1857 the manufacture of marine engines commenced. The Stobcross site was disposed of in 1874. The company specialized in the liner, mail, and passenger steamship trades . . ."

More yards were acquired in time, and "Shipbuilding ceased with the launch of the Hamlet (No. 657) in 1967. The company's ship repairing assets were acquired by Yarrow (Shipbuilders) Ltd in 1975 while the engine works became part of British Shipbuilders in 1977 and were subsequently converted into a factory for guided missile launchers." Records are held at the Strathclyde Regional Archieves, Mitchell Library, Glasgow, and at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London.

Four ships they built became blockade runners during the American Civil War, Druid, Britannia, Emma, and Minnie.
