[Gerald Albe & Nils Hall: Sveriges äldsta fartygsregister. Sjöhistorisk årsbok 1944.]
Description of a cat from Aubin's Dictionnaire de marine, Haag, 1742 (3rd).
The second model is extremly interesting. Note that the planking of the flat of the bottom, or from the keel to the turn of the bilge, are running parallel with the keel and the stem. I have only seen this kind of planking in Dutch ships before. See e.g. plate 21 of a "Heeren Zeiljagt" by I. Vlaming, 1759, in Beschrijvende Catalogus der Scheepsmodellen en Scheepsbouwkundige teekeningen 1600-1900, Amsterdam, 1943. Above the bilge the run of the planking is normal again. It is flatbottomed and the bow is also extraordinarily broad. The sides are each pierced for one plus four guns on the lower deck and 11 on the upper and six on the half deck. I have not been able to identify what type of ship this is. Ship typology is sometimes a difficult subject. Even the Dictionary of Ship Types by Germans Dudszus & Henriot published in 1986, fails most of the time. Part of the confusion is due to the fact that the "classification" varied over time and with region and sometimes even between individuals in the same region. In the case of the barque, the determining factor even changed from hullform to type of rig.
There is for instance a plan in the Danish National Archives labeled Flooteskib eller Lastdrager from 1707 drawn by O. Judichaer and not unlike the model described above. This ship has a very square midship-section, the only tumble home is found above the upper deck in the bulwarks which are very low. The bows are equally broad and it has an ordinary ships stern [the aftermost part of the plan is missing in the reproduction]. It does not exhibit any of the features traditionally associated with a flute. While the flute was a distinctive type of ship, I do not think a lastdrager implied more than a common carrier.
