Hindostan

An iron full-rigged ship built in 1863 by J. Reid & Co., Port Glasgow. Dimensions 182'4"×31'4"×20'9 and tonnage 883 GRT, 833 NRT and 778 tons under deck. Painted with a band of black and white ports. Rigged with royal sails and double topsails.

Launched at the shipyard of J. Reid & Co., Port Glasgow, British & Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd. Assigned the Official British Reg. No. 47634 and signal VPKM.

Sold to the New Zealand Shipping Co., Christchurch.

Sailed from London to Auckland in 108 days. Under command of Captain Peek late of the Beth Shan.

Renamed to Waitara.

Sailed from ... to Napier in 92 days. Captain Caborne.

Sailed from ... to Napier/Nelson in 89 days. Captain Caborne.

Sailed from Britain to New Zealand in 109 days. Was delayed off Start Point for 12 days. Captain Cowell.

Sailed from ... to Dunedin in 108 days. Captain Cowell.

Grounded on voyage from Dunedin to Bluff to complete the wool cargo, but escaped with only slight damage.

Sailed from ... to Wellington in 95 days. Captain Brown.
1882 September 30 - December 29
Sailed from ... to Wellington in 90 days. Captain Brown.
1883 June 26 [22?]
Collided with and was struck midships twice by the same owner's ship Hurunui and sank "in two minutes". Of the crew of 28 and eight passengers only 16 were saved. Captain Webster and the first officer were jointly blamed for the disaster.
